The Appointed Medical Adviser (AMA formerly known as NMA) is a doctor whose main role is to oversee the regular medical assessments required under the Queensland Coal Mine Workers’ Health Scheme(CMWHS) and is administered by Resource, Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) – formerly known as the Coal Board administered by the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy (DNRME).
The role of the AMA is prevention and early detection of work-related illness. The AMA has no role in treating conditions detected during the medical assessment, but will refer the worker to his or her own doctor.
Every employer of coal mine workers in Queensland is required to appoint an AMA.
Our Occupational Physicians are experienced AMA’s.
AMA services include:
How to select the right AMA
Choosing the best AMA for your organisation is an important decision.
There currently are no formal training requirements for a registered medical practitioner to act as an AMA, however, the Queensland Government recommends that AMA’s visit the mine site and have a good understanding of the tasks being carried out across the mine.
Employers need to understand the experience and expertise of the AMA they are appointing.
Expertise
Is the AMA you are considering an Occupational Physician?
Our consultant Occupational Physicians, have specific training in the effects of health on work and conversely the effects of work on health. They are Fellows of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine within the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
Regular regional and on-site presence
AMAs need a sound knowledge of working conditions in open cut and underground coal mines. Our AMAs attend on-site to understand the mine’s working environment and the hazards that mine workers are likely to encounter.
In addition to AMA services, Resile Occupational Physicians have a regular regional clinic schedule across Queensland.
Electronic management system – managing compliance for CMWHS periodic assessments
We have a complete management system to support the timely implementation of CMWHS to ensure both new and periodic assessments are completed on time and compliance is maintained.
Our customised health record management system enables us to manage your ongoing health surveillance needs.
