Running a business in manufactured stone benchtops, quarrying or concreting? Read on
Manufactured stone benchtops have become a fashionable option in recent years with our kitchen renovation obsession fuelled by popular TV renovation shows.
However, this week Worksafe Queensland released an alert to draw attention to significant health risks faced by workers – especially those involved manufacturing stone benchtops.
Whilst the finished benchtop is stable, it is the cutting, grinding, sanding or polishing which can release fine dust containing a substance called respirable crystalline silica (RCS).
In particular, engineered stone poses a higher risk as it contains up to 95 percent silica whereas natural stone contains 5-50% silica.
Risks to workers?
Accumulated exposure to RCS can result in very serious adverse health effects, including silicosis.
The Queensland Workplace Health and Safety Alert (released 18/ 09/18) reported findings from recent audits:
“…twenty-three improvement notices were issued for health monitoring, fit testing of respiratory protective equipment and inadequate dust control issues...”
Other industry sectors whose workers may be exposed to silica include those involved in quarrying and construction.
