Audiometric testing (hearing testing) should be made available to all persons likely to be exposed to:
Employees should be educated about noise hazards in the workplace and the role of audiometry.
Testing is an important part of a hearing conservation program to manage risks from noise exposure in a workplace.
The purpose of audiometry is to determine the employees hearing threshold levels as accurately as practicable.
Reference audiometry is used to establish the status of the employees hearing thresholds, while monitoring audiometry is used to establish any subsequent deviations from that reference.
Audiometry testing should go beyond the individual and monitor the occupational noise management program for a workplace by identifying temporary threshold shifts, analysing data of groups and workplaces and triggering a review of control measures for particular workers, groups or sites when required.
Each statutory area has specific requirements for who requires testing, when and by who. Talk to us about your workplaces individual needs.
Reference Audiometry
Reference audiometry is carried out during pre-employment medicals or as soon as possible after commencement of employment. It should be carried out prior to the commencement of duty in a noisy area.
Reference audiometry shall be repeated whenever a significant permanent deterioration or improvement in thresholds has been detected by means of monitoring audiometry.
Monitoring Audiometry
The main purpose of monitoring audiometry is to detect threshold shift which may be temporary or permanent. Temporary threshold shift is an early indicator of the likelihood of permanent threshold shift. Monitoring audiometry is carried in accordance with the specific requirements for your legislative area.
