Why do you need it?
In our modern world there are interpersonal conflicts, difficult situations and employees who do not behave according to expectations (just like in the wider community).
Employers are required to manage not only the physical hazards but psychological hazards at work.
How does it work?
We will:
- arrange a teleconsultation with a trauma informed care doctor initially and at recommended intervals to monitor the employee’s progress.
- organise consultation(s) and liaison with relevant parties
- Treating practitioners, specialists and client’s compliance team
- identify evidence-based support options suited to individual needs and preference (self-led or as part of an employer sponsored program)
- manage appointments, referrals, and treatment plans.
Case Example – Supportive Plan
An employee from the Health and Wellbeing department regularly exposed to distressing incidents and injury management as part of their role. Although not directly involved in these incidents, the cumulative exposure began to affect their mental health and job performance.
An initial consultation was conducted with the worker to assess overall wellbeing and how best to support them using the principles of trauma informed care. This service offering was able to provide;
- regular teleconsultations with an occupational doctor, ensuring continuity of care
- evidence-based advice on coping mechanisms and support strategies
- education on trauma effects
- referral for psychology (or other service as indicated) sessions with a provider of the employee’s choosing, with employer approval
- progress reports to the employer post each review.
The proactive trauma informed care program was a critical intervention that allowed the worker to manage the effects of vicarious trauma while successfully continuing their role in a challenging environment. By focusing on early intervention, education, and ongoing support, the program proactively prevents long-term psychological impact and empowered the worker to regain control over their wellbeing.
Case Example Proactive Plan
Employee reported significant distress, including symptoms of work-related anxiety and depression associated with reported workplace bullying issues, which were affecting both their mental health and job performance. Although the incident was being investigated internally by the employer, they sought the support of a trauma-informed occupational doctor to assist and support the affected individual through the process.
An initial consultation was conducted with the worker to assess overall wellbeing and how best to support them using the principles of trauma informed care. The service was able to provide;
- regular teleconsultations with an occupational doctor, ensuring continuity of care
- evidence-based advice on coping mechanisms and support strategies
- arrangement of psychology session with a provider of the employee’s choosing, with employer approval
- progress report to the employer
- workplace recommendation to ensure that both employee and employer were able to resolve the situation without recurrence.
This employee’s plan spanned a period of four months, with close collaboration between parties, the worker was successfully transitioned to the support of their GP.
Through the reactive Complex Case Management service, the employee received trauma-informed support to manage the mental health effects of workplace bullying. The close collaboration between mental health professionals, the employer and psychology service providers ensured a wholistic approach to ensuring the employee’s wellbeing and sustainability in the workforce.
