Why do you need it?
Ensuring a safe and productive workplace is essential for both employer and employee. Our Fit for Work Assessment assists the employer and the employee for fitness to perform the inherent requirements of their role without significant risk to themselves or others. Each assessment is tailored to the circumstances of the case.
These assessments are often conducted where there are concerns that the employee is unable to perform the whole requirements of the role, after a period of absence or illness or injury or medical treatment, often for non-work related concerns.
This services aim is to return a worker back to work or keep a worker at work. If you believe the worker is not fit for continued employment this a medicolegal assessment (Fitness for Duty) and not suitable for this service.
Our Occupational Health Doctors and Occupational Physician Registrars can:
- determine whether the worker is fit to safely perform normal duties
- determine if the worker can return to work in a safe and sustainable capacity
- provide recommendations for meaningful suitable duties based on specific role requirements
- provide recommendations on restrictions
- enable the worker to remain at work when appropriate
- ensure compliance with workplace safety regulations.
Case Example
- aircraft engineer recently experienced a myocardial infarction (heart attack). Worker receiving medical treatment and undergoing cardiac rehabilitation.
- Resile team:
- gathered medical documentation
- arranged an initial consultation with the employee
- concerns were raised about the strenuous physical demands of the role and further information was obtained – a cardiac stress test report and report from Exercise Physiologist
- further teleconsultation to discuss with the employee
- report advising fit for duty with temporary restrictions on physically strenuous tasks to ensure work hardening, with a review recommended in two weeks to assess progression.
Through the Fit for Work assessment the employer was able to ensure the worker’s safe and sustainable return to a demanding, safety-critical role without compromising the employee’s health or safety. The employer received clear, actionable guidance on managing the worker’s graduated return to duties.
