Introduction
Do you keep injury statistics for regulatory requirements and internal purposes?
We offer services during all three phases of the injury management process:
- post injury File Review and Injury Classification
- ensuring injury has been classified correctly according to guidelines and
- interpreting precedents in OSHA and other rulings to optimize results for clients.
Which injury classification guidelines?
Guidelines for injury classification will be directed by an employer policy or other stakeholders (an operator of a site compels a contractor) but are generally framed around those from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), U.S. Department of Labour. Other alternative classification methods include regulatory reporting and organisation specific protocols.
Why do you need it?
Injury and illness statistics are taken very seriously by organisations. The general indicator for a classification is based on the treatment requirements. But what happens if a particular doctor is more cautious and indicates restricted duties or time off work where possibly it is not required.
The classification procedures allow the organisation to seek a second opinion from a suitable qualified doctor to ensure that the organisation is not penalised for a specific doctor’s treatment preferences.
The most common issue we address is regarding classification of lost time injuries, medical treatment injuries, restricted duties injuries and first aid injuries.
We can assist you to navigate this often convoluted and complex area.
Case Example
- employee with a muscle strain consulted General Practitioner and was provided with a certificate for 4 days off work
- employer referred for injury classification as this was currently classified as a lost time injury
- injury statistics affect contractual arrangements but classification are strictly managed according to specific classification frameworks such as OHSA
- OSHA allows for a suitable doctor to review the case and classify
- the Resile doctor reviewed the case via desktop review and advised that time away from work was not standard practice for the severity of this injury and reclassified this as a medical treatment injury due to the appropriate prescription of anti-inflammatory medication.
