Functional Assessments

Why do you need it?

Functional assessments are used to assess an applicant or employees physical function, generally measured against the requirements of the role. The functional requirements of a role is generally described in a job task analysis.

Full functional assessments generally are a musculoskeletal assessment reviewing:

  • Upper limb
  • Back
  • Lower limbs
  • Balance
  • Strength
  • Manual Handling

Some assessments include a cardiorespiratory assessment, usually by a step test method.

Functional assessment on their own can have limited effectiveness and there are very little predictive factors in this type of assessment, rather it is a snapshot in time.

Resile has developed a series of focussed functional assessments which we utilise when a standard pre-employment assessment or PreOPP indicates musculoskeletal flags. This approach is more cost effective as we are only assessing possible problem areas, or nothing at all where there are no flags.

Our focused functionals include:

  • Neck
  • Thoracic back
  • Shoulder
  • Wrist and elbow
  • Lumbar back
  • Hip
  • Knee
  • Ankle

How does it work?

Whether you need a full functional assessment or have opted to only proceed with a focused functional, we can arrange an appointment at a Resile clinic or with a preferred provider. Functional assessments can be facilitated by specialist physiotherapist or exercise physiologist.

FAQs

The applicant or employee should wear comfortable clothing and shoes that they can do physical tasks in. The functional assessment will be approximately 30 minutes depending on the complexity. They may be required to go up and down a step.
