Safer Together is a not-for-profit, member-led organisation of Operating Companies and Contract Partner Companies in the rapidly evolving Australian Energy Production Industry.

The Onshore Australian Oil and Gas Exploration & Production Industry has a diverse workforce. This workforce conducts activities in remote locations, away from sophisticated medical facilities and rapid emergency response.
Safer Together has developed a Fitness To Work Medical Assessment Guideline. It is intended that the Safer Together fitness to work assessment will establish an acceptable baseline medical fitness to work (FTW) standard for all companies who choose to implement it so that other additional FTW medicals will not be required.
How does it work?
The examination will be conducted in accordance with the Safe Together Guidelines.
The medical examination will include however may not be limited to:
- Visual acuity
- Cardiovascular problems/cardiovascular risk calculation
- Diabetes history
- Epilepsy history/status
- Mental/psychiatric disorders
- Musculoskeletal disorders
- Spirometry (hearing test)
- Audiometry
- Other conditions will be investigated (e.g. blackouts, cancer, dizziness, metabolic/endocrine conditions, alcohol and drug use, liver, renal, respiratory, sleep, syncope and/or vestibular disorders).
The Safer Together Medical is required every two to three years or after a significant health event within that period e.g. (heart attack, serious injury, onset of chronic disease or for a newly diagnosed mental illness).
These assessments can be conducted, in our clinics, via our network providers or at your site for the convenience of your organisation and your employees.
FAQs
Yes and no. There is no specific requirement to undertake a safer together medical. Safer Together is an industry group working for the safety of all in onshore oil and gas in Australia. There is however laws in each state that the employer,or the entity in control of a workplace is required to ensure health and safety.
To ensure health and safety oil and gas companies can use the resources and programs of Safer Together as part of their management plan.
