Why do you need it?
Poorly designed or set up workstations are uncomfortable and can significantly affect the health of the workers who use them and their productivity.
Maintaining static and uncomfortable positions for long periods of time can cause musculoskeletal issues, leading to pain, stiffness, numbness or tingling in the neck, shoulders, back, arms and legs. Lack of appropriate lighting can lead to eye strain, headaches, or migraines.
No one is at their most productive when they are uncomfortable, and employee efficiency is affected by the structure of their work environment. Persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) must eliminate or minimise health and safety risks to their workers as much as they reasonably can under Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) laws, which includes risks associated with poor workstation set up or design.
Ergonomics is the study of how people can interact with their environment most efficiently and safely. An ergonomic assessment is about fitting the task to the person, creating an optimal environment for comfort, efficiency, and safety. The work from home set up is also considered a workstation, and they require ergonomic consideration for WHS.
In many organisations there is a culture of hybrid working and/or hot desking and supporting workers’ understanding of how to set up their own workstations to be most safe and comfortable allows for a flexible and efficient workforce.
